MBFW 2024: A CELEBRATION OF CULTURE, ART, AND DESIGN INNOVATION

The 2024 edition of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Sri Lanka (MBFWSL) promises to be more than a showcase of fashion, it’s an immersive experience that celebrates the fusion of culture, art, and design innovation. Bringing together a stellar line-up of emerging, established, and regional designers, MBFWSL is setting new benchmarks not just in fashion, but in creativity, sustainability, and cross-cultural collaboration. With its forward-thinking approach, the event aims to position Sri Lanka as a leader in the business of fashion, fostering regional growth and innovation.

This year’s theme revolves around two critical aspects of contemporary fashion: craft revival and sustainable innovation. Sri Lanka’s rich heritage in craftsmanship, ranging from traditional handloom, Beeralu lacemaking, Dumbara weaving, Batik, hand knitting, crochet, and natural dyeing, takes centre stage. These artisanal techniques are being reinterpreted through modern design thinking, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in sustainable fashion.

Designers at MBFWSL are championing circular fashion models, exploring new ways of sourcing materials to minimize environmental impact. Upcycling, recycling, and repurposing pre- and post-consumer waste from the apparel industry are key techniques on display. It’s not just about clothes anymore, it’s about reimagining the entire design process.

Regional collaboration is also in focus, with Indian and Sri Lankan designers working hand-in-hand. These partnerships reflect a broader South Asian identity in fashion, blending traditional practices with global trends to create something truly unique. The result is a fusion of ideas and techniques that reinvents age-old crafts for a contemporary global audience.

This year, MBFWSL has appointed internationally acclaimed designer Amesh Wijesekera as Creative Director for two of its most anticipated shows: the Future Craft Runway and the Destination Island Runway. Amesh is known for his ability to blend local craftsmanship with cutting-edge design, making him the perfect choice to lead these ground-breaking showcases.

Amesh’s vision focuses on amplifying the voices of designers who are at the forefront of balancing creativity with sustainable design. His role goes beyond curating collections; he is shaping the very identity of MBFWSL, ensuring it reflects the modern spirit of Sri Lankan fashion. Through his direction, MBFWSL is poised to show the world that Sri Lanka is ready with fresh ideas and innovative, design-led solutions that are both desirable and responsible.

Amesh’s shows will be a sensory journey, inspired by the island’s vibrant landscapes, sounds, and textures. With each day themed to reflect a different aspect of Sri Lanka, the audience will be transported into a world of hope, escapism, and optimism.

The Future Craft Runway is one of the event’s most anticipated shows, focusing on sustainable fashion and craft revival. Designers will adopt circular design principles, working closely with local artisanal communities to integrate handmade techniques into their collections. This year’s runway will see the likes of:

Ocean Conservation: Designer Ruwanthi Gajadeera collaborates with marine biologist Asha de Vos to raise awareness about ocean pollution through her collection.

Ayurvedic Fashion: Sri Land introduces herbal, hand-woven vegan textiles, promoting sustainable wellness through fashion.

Community Craft: Lithira Daluwatte’s collection of handmade garments supports grassroots livelihoods and women’s financial empowerment through crochet and knitting.

Regional Partnerships: The cross-border collaboration of Sufiyan x Ashleyn blends Indian block printing with Sri Lankan handloom, showcasing the power of regional collaboration.

MBFWSL has always been a launchpad for emerging designers, and this year is no exception. Rising stars will take the stage, exploring new technologies like AI and digital fashion while staying true to Sri Lanka’s rich cultural traditions. Designers to watch include:

  • Sithma Illangasinghe: Known for her AI-driven, customizable designs, Sithma is pushing the boundaries of digital fashion.

  • Thamali Dharmawardena: Blending artistic craftsmanship with practicality, her waterproof handloom accessories are a testament to the adaptability of local materials.

  • Randika Karunarathne: Reviving the delicate craft of Beeralu lace, Randika brings a fresh, contemporary take on traditional Sri Lankan garments.

MBFWSL’s global appeal is reflected in its line-up of international designers, each bringing a unique perspective to the event. From India’s Ka-Sha, known for her craft textiles made from waste materials, to WearPoochki, blending cultural identity with bold, contemporary silhouettes, these designers represent the cutting edge of sustainable fashion on the global stage. Speaking to Daily Mirror, Designer, Karishma Shahani Khan of Ka-Sha, stated, “this is our first time in Sri Lanka, and we are eager to explore and learn about its unique approach to fashion and design. The opportunity to immerse ourselves in a new culture, connect with its people, and understand the subtleties of a country so close to ours is incredibly exciting for us.” Designer, Ishanee Mukherjee from WearPoochki, stated, “I'm truly honoured to be part of MBFWSL x SLDF! This collaboration holds great significance for me, as it brings together a community that celebrates the rich, traditional craftsmanship of Southeast Asia. I'm excited to both contribute to and learn from this dynamic platform, which promotes cultural preservation and drives innovation.”

Alongside emerging talent established local designers are also pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in fashion. From Dimitra Sahabandu’s hand-crafted designs to Sara Izzadeen’s commercial success in menswear, MBFWSL is a celebration of both artistry and business acumen. These designers represent the future of Sri Lankan fashion, with collections ready to transition from runway to retail.

More than just a fashion show, MBFWSL is a hub for business and talent development, connecting designers with buyers, investors, and industry experts. By creating opportunities for Sri Lankan designers to expand into international markets, MBFWSL is fostering long-term growth and innovation.

MBFWSL 2024 runs from November 7th to 10th, with five major shows featuring emerging designers, future craft, and fashion innovation. This year’s event is expected to draw delegates, buyers, and media representatives from around the world, all eager to discover new talent and explore the South Asian fashion market. For those unable to attend in person, MBFWSL will live-stream the shows globally, making this celebration of Sri Lankan fashion accessible to everyone. Mark your calendars and join the movement that’s driving the future of fashion in South Asia.
