Art Lunch with Gayan Prageeth

About the Experience

Gayan Prageeth
Gayan Prageeth (b. 1980, Sri Lanka) is a contemporary artist recognized for his evocative explorations of Sri Lanka’s social, political, and environmental landscapes. A graduate of the University of Visual and Performing Arts, Colombo, he employs a distinctive technique that combines acrylics, ink drawings on rice paper, and ready-made materials. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the India Art Fair (2024), Art Dubai (2018), and the Colombo Art Biennale (2016), and is held in private collections across Asia and Europe.
Summary of Work:
Gayan Prageeth’s Before Nineteen Eighty Three offers a poignant reflection on the transformation of the Jaffna Peninsula, capturing its lush pre-war beauty while alluding to the losses following the 1983 civil unrest. Through symbolic elements like the bucket an everyday object turned historical marker Prageeth intertwines memory, place, and trauma into his visual language. His broader practice blends intricate painting and installation to comment on Sri Lanka’s fractured histories, environmental challenges, and the global echoes of conflict and resilience.
